NATS Copyright Policy Update

Dear Texoma members,

I am writing you to information of a change to the NATS Copyright Policy that was approved by our board this summer.  I was delighted to vote in favor of this change.  This information will also appear on the Texoma website shortly.

The underlying premise is that primary responsibility for following copyright law, as the result of recent court rulings, is being transferred from NATS to teachers, singers, and pianists.  With our new copyright policy and teacher/student/pianist copyright acknowledgements, it is NO LONGER NECESSARY to check for original scores at NATS events. Furthermore, the the use of iPads and tablets as musical scores for collaborative pianists during all levels of NATS auditions has been approved, and they are held to the same standards of copyright as any other musical score used for auditions.

NATS still encourages its members, their students, accompanists and the general population to become educated about, and to comply with, all applicable copyright laws. Reproduction of a copyrighted work constitutes copyright infringement unless a license to reproduce such work has been obtained, the use is considered fair use, the work is in the public domain, or a valid exception to copyright infringement exists.

NATS requires students, teachers and other participants in NATS affiliated events, auditions and competitions to affirm compliance with the NATS Copyright Policy, and to use only authorized reproductions of copyrighted works.  NATS members, singers, and pianists will need to affirm that they will only use legal copies of music during NATS events as part of the registration process.  Entrants will not be able to compete until they and their pianist complete this copyright acknowledgment.

For additional information:

Additionally, I am writing to confirm that Summer Program Auditions will be occurring at this year's conference.  You can find additional information about them at our website, texomanats.org.  As a reminder, unlike most of the other aspects of the conference, students will register themselves directly at https://www.auditionware.com/texoma/spa.php.  Registration for SPA opens tomorrow, September 2.

Sincerely,

Randall Umstead

Texoma Region Governor

Message from Summer Program Auditions Chair

Dear Members,

I hope you’re well and resting some on this Labor Day holiday. It is with great pleasure I am writing to say Registration for our Summer Program Auditions (SPA) is now open!

The opportunity to grow a singer’s craft in the summer through a uniquely supportive and enriching environment is the reason Texoma has brought SPA to our region. So, teachers, please encourage your students who are ready and interested to register for this fantastic opportunity!

Students and members wishing to audition must use the following link to register: https://www.auditionware.com/texoma/spa.php

We have endeavored to keep the registration process as user friendly as possible. Do enter all required information completely and accurately. Please contact me with any questions regarding the registration process or required information and materials (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). Questions or concerns regarding payments may be directed to me or our Texoma Treasurer, Gregory Brookes (This email address is being protected from spambots. If you have a special request regarding audition times for you or your students, I need you to make that request to me via email by October 16thRegistration for SPA will close at 6:00 p.m. on October 16th.

Thank you!

Message from the Governor

Dear Texoma NATS Members,

I hope that you have all enjoyed a wonderful start to your school years, and that you are enjoying a well-earned holiday weekend.  I am writing to prepare our region for conference registration, which will open on September 9.

Conference Registration

We hope to open registration for the 69th Texoma NATS Regional Conference and Student Auditions at the University of North Texas on September 9, and registration will close on October 4 at 6pm.  The conference begins on Wednesday, October 30 and concludes on Saturday, November 2.  Molly Fillmore, site coordinator, and her faculty colleagues at UNT have been tremendous partners, and I look forward to seeing you all at the conference.

Hotel information and all conference updates will be posted soon on our website, www.texomanats.org, under the “Region Conference” tab.  It is essential to book hotel rooms as soon as possible, as our conference is the same weekend as a NASCAR race at the Texas Motor Speedway and UNT’s homecoming. We have been successful at reserving sufficient hotel space with the assistance of the Denton Chamber of Commerce, but hotels will likely extend no grace with the posted cutoff dates.  Consequently, I have attached hotel information to this email.

Conference registration is $60, and each student audition entry is $20.  Parking will have a fee associated with it this year, with details regarding parking cost and location available soon under the “Location” link within the “Conference Registration” tab on our website.

Conference guests may purchase passes through their registration for lunch at UNT dining halls on Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday. The cost of one lunch is $6.25. Guests are granted access to an all-you-can-eat buffet, including one hall with vegan options, and a wide array of beverages. Guests can choose from three dining halls located near the UNT music building.  Additional dining information can be found soon under the “Dining Options at UNT” page under our “Regional Conference” tab.

UNT Opera will present Mozart’s masterpiece Don Giovanni Friday evening, November 1, and distinguished alum Emily Pulley will offer a recital on Thursday evening, October 31.  Each event is at 7:30pm.  Recital tickets are $15 and opera tickets are $25, all purchasable with your conference registration.  Emilly Pulley will also be offering a masterclass on Friday, and Mary Henderson-Stucky, Professor Emerita from CCM, will be offering a masterclass on Thursday as part of the Artist Series.

UNT is also offering an open dress rehearsal of Don Giovanni on Wednesday evening, October 30 at 7:30pm.   Tickets for the dress rehearsal are $5 for students and $10 non-students.  Dress rehearsal tickets may only be purchased at the door, from UNT and not through your conference registration.  For the dress rehearsal there will be no advanced reservations and seating will be general admission.

Registration will again occur through Auditionware.  Although you will find detailed information about the conference and the registration process at our website, www.texomanats.org, you will register through www.nats.org.  Melinda Brou will send you detailed instructions for this process soon. Registering through the NATS website allows for a detailed receipt to be stored in your member account for you to reference at any time for tax or reimbursement purposes.

As a reminder of a recent change, Texoma NATS allows teachers only entering high school students the option of attending the Saturday events of the Conference at a reduced registration fee of $20. Teachers entering only high school students are, of course, also welcome to attend the entire conference beginning on Thursday, for the full conference fee of $60.

Additionally, the Board of Control also approved a small modification to our attendance requirement last year. As you may know, members (with the above exception for independent teachers) are required to be in attendance for the duration of the conference if they are entering students in the student auditions.  We have now added in a medical exception in extreme cases, as follows:

If you fail to attend the Thursday morning judges meeting and avail yourself to judge for the entire conference, your students will be disqualified with the following exceptions:

  • The member is unable to attend due to a life-threatening or degenerative illness.
  • The member is receiving extensive short-term medical treatment due to a medical emergency
  • The member is not authorized to travel by his or her physician or midwife

If you have questions regarding or want to explore this exception, please contact our auditions chair, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Members may not claim this exception without Melinda’s prior approval.

NATSAA

Our Texoma NATSAA prelims (October 30 and 31) and regional finals (Nov 2) take place in odd-numbered years instead of the longstanding Edward Baird Singer of the Year (EBSOTY) competition.  We are preparing for two days of prelims because of the outstanding participation during our last preliminary round.  Singing times are assigned randomly according to competition rules, but we will try to schedule as many singers for Wednesday as time allows.

Despite the change in name, we will still award the same prize money for our regional finals as we do for EBSOTY: $1000 for First Place, $500 for Second Place, and $250 for Third Place.  Singers can register for NATSAA: https://www.nats.org/nats-artist-awards.html.  Singers may not apply through the Texoma website.  The deadline for this application is September 9th, and registration is through the preceding link and not the Texoma website.

NATS Hall Johnson Spiritual Competition

The Texoma Region will hold a regional round of the national NATS Hall Johnson Spiritual Competition on Wednesday, October 30.  Teachers, you will be able to register singers for this competition through your conference registration, and a singer in this category will not count against your 6 entries.  The registration fee will be the same as with other categories: $20 per entry.  For more information on the Hall Johnson Competition, visit here: https://www.nats.org/Hall_Johnson_Spirituals_Competition.html

Finally, I want to orient you toward your important points of contact as we move closer to our conference.  Please note the following:

Message from the Auditions Chair

Dear Texoma Colleagues,

I hope this message finds you all well and having a wonderful start to your fall semesters.

As of today, the registration process for the Texoma NATS Conference and Auditions is now open. The conference will be held at Baylor University, in Waco, TX, November 7-10, 2018.

Registration is now open and will close on October 10, 2018 at 6 pm.

To register students for the Student Auditions, you will need to be up to date on your NATS national dues. You will access the registration process through the NATS website at www.nats.org. Login at the NATS website, click on Member Home, and then scroll down until you seen the green box “NATS Audition Registration”—and this will take you to the registration program.

Detailed instructions for accessing the registration program, navigating the program and trouble shooting this process can be found at: https://www.nats.org/_Library/NSA_Files/Accessing_the_NATS_Auditions_Registration_System_-_PDF_instructions.pdf

Before you begin to register students, you will need the following information for each student. Please be accurate with the information as it is used in the submission process as students advance towards the National rounds. You are able to save and leave the audition program if you find you need to complete it at a later time.

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Phone Number
  • Email
  • Birth Date
  • Audition Category
  • Pianist Name

At the Texoma NATS website, you will find information regarding categories, repertoire requirements, eligibility, time limits and more under the Student Auditions tab, under the Auditions button, www.texomanats.org.

A few reminders and some helpful hints regarding areas that people frequently encounter trouble with registration:

  • Ensure that your students have an art song in English. This is a requirement of all categories at the classical NSA auditions—and it must be an art song, not an aria or musical theater selection.
  • Please ensure that you have the correct number of languages represented for your students’ categories (i.e. categories 11-14 must have at least 3 languages represented).
  • Please be sure that you have your correct school listed under your judge’s profile and that this school exactly matches the spelling and capitalization of the school your student attends. It is highly likely that your college or university is already available in the drop down menu, if your school has submitted students before. Please check here first, before entering it yourself. If you are an independent teacher, please list your school/studio as “Your Last Name Voice Studio” – i.e. “Brou Voice Studio”

Some extra resources that you may find useful:

Finally, Edward Baird Singer of the Year and Summer Program Auditions will be registered through www.texomanats.org through the link for each specific program under the Auditions tab.
