Your regional leadership has been considering the impacts of COVID-19 on our members, students, and the institutions of our region, and how those dynamics will affect our upcoming conference.  Texoma has successfully delivered an in-person conference for 69 years, and student auditions in 68 of those years.  Because of the uncertainty around our ability to safely travel or gather in large groups this fall, compounded by the financial impacts the pandemic has brought on our members and the institutions that support their work, your region’s leadership developed a proposal to safely deliver this year’s conference.  We presented this plan to the Texoma Board of Control on Sunday evening, and the board voted unanimously to adopt this proposal.  As a result of this decision, we intend to move this year’s 70th region conference entirely online.

  • The conference will be 100% online and will take place during expanded conference dates of November 2-7, 2020.
  • Conference registration will still be online, and registration will open on September 1, 2020.  The registration deadline will be October 1, 2020.
  • We intend to offer all of the standard elements of the conference:
    • The Edward Baird Singer of the Year competition
    • Summer Program Auditions
    • American Negro Spirituals Competition
    • Texoma Artist Series
    • Texoma Student Auditions
  • A new, generally reduced fee structure will apply for this year’s conference:
    • Conference registration: $40
    • Student Audition Entry fee: $20
    • Summer Program Audition: $10
    • American Negro Spirituals Competition Entry Fee: $20 ($10 if entered in addition to Student Auditions)
    • SOTY Entry Fee: $50
  • We are working with our host institution (Texas Tech University) to provide a livestreamed guest recital and opera performance for all teachers and students who register for the conference (or enter the student auditions).
  • We will explore online options that will allow teachers to connect with one another during the conference.
  • While we wish we could present this conference at no cost to members and students, the expenses to the region and the host institution even with a virtual conference are still significant. We hope that the elimination of travel time and cost will also help members find these costs reasonable.

While we deeply regret losing the ability to gather together this fall, we will spend these next 5 months working to offer perhaps the most significant conference in our region’s history.  Virtual presentations provide the possibility for much broader access within our membership and for our students.  While nothing can take the place of face to face contact, we intend to make this conference meaningful and memorable for you and your students.  As with our teaching in recent months, we may even discover improvements we wish to retain when life returns to something a little more normal.

Additional details will be forthcoming over the next few weeks and months, and we will provide these details as soon as possible.  Thank you for your continued support of NATS and the art of singing.

NATS Copyright Policy Update

Dear Texoma members,

I am writing you to information of a change to the NATS Copyright Policy that was approved by our board this summer.  I was delighted to vote in favor of this change.  This information will also appear on the Texoma website shortly.

The underlying premise is that primary responsibility for following copyright law, as the result of recent court rulings, is being transferred from NATS to teachers, singers, and pianists.  With our new copyright policy and teacher/student/pianist copyright acknowledgements, it is NO LONGER NECESSARY to check for original scores at NATS events. Furthermore, the the use of iPads and tablets as musical scores for collaborative pianists during all levels of NATS auditions has been approved, and they are held to the same standards of copyright as any other musical score used for auditions.

NATS still encourages its members, their students, accompanists and the general population to become educated about, and to comply with, all applicable copyright laws. Reproduction of a copyrighted work constitutes copyright infringement unless a license to reproduce such work has been obtained, the use is considered fair use, the work is in the public domain, or a valid exception to copyright infringement exists.

NATS requires students, teachers and other participants in NATS affiliated events, auditions and competitions to affirm compliance with the NATS Copyright Policy, and to use only authorized reproductions of copyrighted works.  NATS members, singers, and pianists will need to affirm that they will only use legal copies of music during NATS events as part of the registration process.  Entrants will not be able to compete until they and their pianist complete this copyright acknowledgment.

For additional information:

Additionally, I am writing to confirm that Summer Program Auditions will be occurring at this year's conference.  You can find additional information about them at our website,  As a reminder, unlike most of the other aspects of the conference, students will register themselves directly at  Registration for SPA opens tomorrow, September 2.

Message from the Auditions Chair

Dear Texoma Colleagues,

I hope this message finds you all well and having a wonderful start to your fall semesters.

As of today, the registration process for the Texoma NATS Conference and Auditions is now open. The conference will be held at Baylor University, in Waco, TX, November 7-10, 2018.

Registration is now open and will close on October 10, 2018 at 6 pm.

To register students for the Student Auditions, you will need to be up to date on your NATS national dues. You will access the registration process through the NATS website at Login at the NATS website, click on Member Home, and then scroll down until you seen the green box “NATS Audition Registration”—and this will take you to the registration program.

Detailed instructions for accessing the registration program, navigating the program and trouble shooting this process can be found at:

Before you begin to register students, you will need the following information for each student. Please be accurate with the information as it is used in the submission process as students advance towards the National rounds. You are able to save and leave the audition program if you find you need to complete it at a later time.

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Phone Number
  • Email
  • Birth Date
  • Audition Category
  • Pianist Name

At the Texoma NATS website, you will find information regarding categories, repertoire requirements, eligibility, time limits and more under the Student Auditions tab, under the Auditions button,

A few reminders and some helpful hints regarding areas that people frequently encounter trouble with registration:

  • Ensure that your students have an art song in English. This is a requirement of all categories at the classical NSA auditions—and it must be an art song, not an aria or musical theater selection.
  • Please ensure that you have the correct number of languages represented for your students’ categories (i.e. categories 11-14 must have at least 3 languages represented).
  • Please be sure that you have your correct school listed under your judge’s profile and that this school exactly matches the spelling and capitalization of the school your student attends. It is highly likely that your college or university is already available in the drop down menu, if your school has submitted students before. Please check here first, before entering it yourself. If you are an independent teacher, please list your school/studio as “Your Last Name Voice Studio” – i.e. “Brou Voice Studio”

Some extra resources that you may find useful:

Finally, Edward Baird Singer of the Year and Summer Program Auditions will be registered through through the link for each specific program under the Auditions tab.
