Edward Baird Singer of the Year Preliminaries – November 3, 2010
We are really looking forward to our 2010 conference to be held on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University. Jaynne Middleton, our site coordinator, the Hardin-Simmons faculty and administration, and members of the Great Plains Chapter have graciously devoted their time and efforts to ensuring that all necessary arrangements for a great conference are in place. Thank you, Hardin-Simmons and Great Plains Chapter!

Metropolitan Opera soprano, Claudia Waite, will return to her native Texoma region as the Guest Artist for this year’s conference.
Soprano Claudia Waite is an active soloist at the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in New York City. She has been a guest artist with Opera Orchestra of New York, Dallas Opera, San Francisco Opera, l’Opera de Lyon, Opera Centrum Nederland, New Israeli Opera and many other major operas and orchestras around the world. Ms. Waite has been hailed by the press as “superlatively gifted,” “perfection in her own right,” and a “dominant musical force onstage.”
The Thursday evening performance will be held in the beautifully restored historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Abilene. Be sure to purchase tickets for yourselves and your students with your online registration.
On Friday evening, The Hardin-Simmons Opera, Choir, and Orchestra will present Orfeo ed Euridice by Christoph Willibald von Gluck. You and your students will not want to miss this performance. Tickets may be purchased with your online registration.
Orfeo mourns the death of his beloved, Euridice, and begs the gods to either restore her to life or allow him to die as well. Permission is granted for Orfeo to descend into Hades to bring Euridice back from the land of the dead. The gods, however, have one condition….
The 2010 Artist Series will feature performances and lectures by Texoma NATS members, a Master Class with our Guest Artist, Claudia Waite, and a special session by Drs. King and Ashby of the West Texas Voice Institute.
Once again this year you will have the opportunity to register for the conference, enter your students for our annual auditions, and make your payments online. Frank Ragsdale, our Auditions Chair, will be working to make our student auditions run smoothly. Please check the Student Auditions information on the website. The appropriate number of Student Audition Entry Forms will automatically load when you fill out your registration. This process is quick and easy to use from the convenience of your office or home. An exciting new feature of this year’s registration process is the ability to save as you go, making it more convenient for you when those inevitable interruptions occur to come back to your registration process and pick up where you left off! When you access the Conference Registration Form, you will see that our fees have remained at $50 for Conference Registration ($55 for late registration), $15 for each Student Entry Fee, and $50 for the Edward Baird Singer of the Year entry fee. I trust that you will be as excited as all of us are about the convenience and cost effectiveness of our online registration process.
Toward the end of what I hope has been a relaxing and rejuvenating summer I invite you to begin planning ahead so that you will not miss our Fall Conference and these exciting programs. I look forward to seeing you all in Abilene!
